    Sarangapani temple is considered 3rd in the line of Srirangam (First) and Tirupathi temples (Second). The temple is revered in Divya Prabandham

    In the 7th–9th century Vaishnava canon, by Andal in one, Bhoothathalvar in two Periyalvar in three, , Thirumalisai Alvar in seven, Peyalvar in two, Nammalvar in eleven and Thirumangai Alvar out 25 Members

    As per a temple legend, once a staunch Brahmin devotee of Aravamudhan spent most of his life to the service of the deity. At the end of his life, he felt his loneliness and prayed for his karma to be performed. Aravamudhan descended himself to perform the last rites on a Deepavali day. The ritual is performed annually by the priests and is one of its kind where death rituals are performed in the precincts of a Vishnu temple

    Temple History

    Sage Bhirugu came to vaigunda to test the patience and tolerance quality of Lord Vishnu by hitting on his chest. Lord did not prevent the sage nor grew angry against Sage Bhiru at the same time he smiled mother Lakshmi asked the lord and how he could allow other male to touch her also while hitting him as the chest lord is her home

    The sage fell in the feet of Lakshmi and said that he was given the job of finding a god so soft in nature for conducting a yagna to whom it was to be dedicated. I hit lord for this test and no motive. He also begged mother that she should be born his daughter

    Mother Lakshmi happily blessed the sage Bhirugu she promised the sage to leave lord from and advised him to take on penance to realize his wish. The sage performed penance in kumbakonam and found mother on the hemapushkarani theertham on lotus

    He took the child and named here komalavalli and gave his daughter to perumal (Vishnu) in a grand wedding. Perumal came to wed mother holding a bow-Sarnga, hence is praised as lord Sarangapani
